4 Reasons to Call a Locksmith After Your Tenant Moves Out
Posted on: 15 June 2020
As a property owner, you know that there are many tasks to complete before you can rent a unit after an old tenant moves out. You need to ensure the security of the property, any remaining tenants, and your next tenants. The following are four ways a locksmith can help you with this task.
1. Re-key All Exterior Locks
You don't want keys floating around for the property, as this could compromise the safety and security of your next tenants. Changing the entrance door locks to the property are the only option. If you have quality locks, your locksmith can simply rekey the existing locks and issue new keys for a small fee. If this isn't possible, you will need to install completely new locks on the property. Make sure to choose locksets that can be rekeyed in the future so you won't have to fully replace the locks each time someone moves out.
2. Lubricate Locks and Latches
Every lockset and latch on the property should be cleaned and lubricated. This ensures that they continue to work correctly, which will prevent both unnecessary service calls from your next tenants as well as breakage and the need for replacing existing locks and latches. Not any lubrication will do, as it must be formulated for use inside locks so it doesn't gum up the keys or the inner workings of the lock.
3. Inspect and Repair Window Latches
Window security is just as important as door security. Your locksmith can inspect all the windows in the house to make sure the latches and locks are working properly. At some point, all these devices need is some lubrication, but occasionally one may need to be repaired or replaced. Your locksmith can also check window security devices, such as alarm sensors, drop bars, or window track locks.
4. Change Any Access Codes
Many properties with amenities like pools, laundry rooms, and gyms require that tenants go through a locked door to reach them. It can be a pain to change the locks on these amenities each time a tenant moves out, so access codes are assigned. You will need to change the access codes to these locations, as well as any gate codes for entering the property, if applicable. If your property still uses keys for accessing amenities, consider having a keyless entry system installed instead. Your locksmith can handle this task for you quickly.
