Choosing A Garage Door Opener Doesn't Have To Be Hard

Posted on: 20 December 2019

Rather than opening a garage door by hand, many garage doors are designed so that you can open it with a garage door opener. This allows you to open and control the door using a handheld remote. If you have never installed a garage door before, it's important to understand that there are several types of garage door openers available to you.

Jackshaft

Jackshaft openers use powerful motors to adjust a torsion spring. This opens or lowers the door. Because they can be mounted on your garage wall, they save on garage space. They also are known for operating very quietly.

Chain Drive

Chain drive openers are a common opener that uses a chain that runs on a trolley. The motor pulls the chain and opens and closes the door. While these types of openers are known for being loud, there are newer versions that are designed to be quieter. Also, the chain opener is known to be one of the most reliable. Just make sure that your chain is always lubricated.

Other types of garage door openers might break, making your garage door not operational until you can hire a garage door repair technician. The chain drive is the best option for a detached drive.

Belt Drive

The belt drive opener is similar to the chain drive opener. It has the same design as a chain drive opener but comes with a belt. This option is often chosen because it is quieter even if it is also more expensive. The belt drive needs regular maintenance so that it continues to work properly. However, if you choose rubber belts that are steel-reinforced and are high-quality, you won't have to worry as much about your belts failing.

Screw Drive

Screw drive openers are also similar to chain drive and belt drive openers. Instead of using a belt or chain, they use a rod. These types of openers are used less often because they can be loud and they are also more sensitive to temperature. However, because they have fewer moving parts, they also require much less maintenance. This can make them less expensive overall. The screw drive is also ideal if you have a heavy garage door.

Choosing the right garage door opener can be a bit intimidating because of how long you will likely keep your garage door. However, once you know the characteristics of each type of door, it will be much easier to choose. Speak to a garage door installation professional if you have any questions.
